Teleprompter vs Cue Cards: Which is Better?

Both teleprompters and cue cards help speakers deliver prepared content. But they serve different purposes and suit different situations. Whether you're filming a corporate video in Richmond, hosting a live event in Virginia Beach, or producing content in Norfolk, here's how to choose the right tool for your Virginia production.

Teleprompter Advantages

• Direct eye contact with camera or audience
• Can handle long, complex scripts
• Easy real-time script changes
• Consistent scroll speed
• Professional, polished appearance

Cue Card Advantages

• Lower cost for simple productions
• No technology to fail
• Can work without power
• Visible gestures from card holder can cue timing

When to Use Teleprompters

For most professional productions across Virginia—from corporate headquarters in Virginia Beach to convention centers in Richmond to broadcast studios in Norfolk—teleprompters are the industry standard.

• On-camera work requiring eye contact
• Long scripts (more than a few sentences)
• Live events with multiple speakers
• Professional productions with budgets
• Any situation where looking polished matters

When Cue Cards Work

• Brief bullet points only
• Talk show style with visible personality
• Very low budget productions
• Outdoor locations without power

Virginia Production Considerations

Virginia's diverse production landscape—from arena events in Richmond to university productions in Virginia Beach to corporate headquarters shoots in Norfolk—demands flexibility. Indoor conference centers favor teleprompters, while outdoor stadium events may require backup plans.

The Verdict

For professional productions, teleprompters are almost always the better choice. The eye contact advantage alone—being able to look directly at your audience while delivering scripted content—is transformative. Virginia Teleprompter has been providing professional prompting services across Virginia since 1999.
